How long will a leaking water heater keeping running?
No one can predict the winning lottery tickets for tonight’s pick 6, or exactly how long your water heater will last.

I can tell you this.  It won’t die over night, and it won’t last another year, some where in between for sure.

Here is the real question you should be asking.
How long should I wait before I replace my leaking water heater? That depends on where the water heater is located.
A) If you have an empty basement with a concrete floor, a leaking basement won’t damage anything if the leak gets worse, concrete sucks up a couple gallons a day and you can most likely wait a couple weeks to even a month or so before replacing the water heater.

B) If you have a semi finished basement you will want to replace the water heater quick enough so it doesn’t get worse and effect the finished part of your basement.
C) If you don’t have a basement/ home built on a concrete slab, or you have the water heater in a finished part of the home like in a utility room, or you have completely finished beautiful basement you have NO time to waste.  If the heater blows out you have a destroyed home.  Wood floors will bend and sections will  warp, wood modeling will be damaged, sheet rock sucks water up like a sponge and even a little water up against sheet rock will damage a large section, even mold is a big concern here.  If you have a water heater in a finished section of your home, you should replace the water heater as fast as possible or you are risking a big head ache, destroyed belongings, long clean up, insurance claims, etc.
